The old town is centred on two large pedestrian squares: place dArmes and place Guillaume. Highlights of the city include the Bock, a rocky projection that forms the cornerstone of the ancient fortress, and the Grand Ducal Palace. Outside the capital are many small towns and interesting sights, including: the Chemin de la Corniche promenade, Citadelle du St Esprit, and Wiltz. The National Military Museum is in Diekirch, just 45 minutes away from the capital and well worth the trip for its exhibits focusing on the countrys history. Close by, you’ll find Bourscheid Castle, dating from a thousand years ago and resting on a scenic plateau overlooking the Sûre River. The serene town of Reisdorf is northeast of the capital and is best reached by car. Interesting sights include the remains of a Roman villa, Hoesdorf steeple, and the US memorial, while nearby hills provide panoramic views of Germanys Eifel region. The Luxembourg Ardennes (known as the Eisléck or Oesling) are the Grand Duchys northernmost region, filled with lush valleys, racing rivers, green plateaus and imposing castles. There are three main towns in the area: Clervaux is the most easily accessed; Vianden is the most touristy; and Wiltz is near to the impressive Esch-sur-Sûre. The Moselle Valley is famous for its wines, especially sweet, fruity-tasting ones. The valleys Route du Vin begins at Waserbillig and follows the Moselle River south through the wine regions capital at Grevenmacher and even further to some picturesque villages. The Cellars of Poll-Fabaire in the hillside village of Wormeldange are also worth a visit, along with the larger Caves Bernard-Massard in Grevenmacher and St Martin in Remich. Müllerthal, otherwise known as ‘Little Switzerland’, is centred on the old Christian town of Echternach, northeast of the capital. Visitors flock here for the excellent hiking, cycling and rock climbing in the beautiful wilderness landscape. To the west of the town are some walking paths to Berdorf (six kilometres away), and on to the ruins of Beaufort Castle. ' ' |
