Travel to Kenya Kenyas outstanding national parks and colourful, multi-ethnic cities offer travellers a uniquely African holiday experience complete with copious wildlife, breathtaking landscapes and a rich cultural legacy. Kenyas fabulously diverse landscape ranges from wide open savannah plains to tropical coastline and elevated highlands, and is the countrys most precious asset. Most visitors to the country are lured by its exotic African flavour and stunning scenery, coupled with the promise of free-roaming wildlife and the age-old heritage of indigenous peoples. The Kenyan capital, Nairobi, is a vibrant, bustling city centre where visitors can indulge in luxuries unusual to many parts of Africa, such as theatre, film and fine dining, or visit the citys many cultural and historical attractions, including the City Market, the National Museum, the Arboretum, or the Kenya Railway Museum. Mombasa is Kenyas second major hub and boasts the imposing Fort Jesus, with a number of enticing beaches nearby. The countrys spectacular national parks are home to a huge variety of animal life, including wildebeest, lions, elephants, buffaloes, zebras, antelopes and hippos. The most popular safari areas are the Masai Mara National Reserve, on the fringes of the Serengeti, and the Amboseli National Park. Kenya has also been one of the first African countries to establish marine parks, with the result that some of the resorts along the tropical Indian Ocean offer strikingly beautiful underwater ecosystems. Mombassa is the chief coastal city and has an important history of maritime trade with a distinctly Arab influence, and dates back eight centuries. It can be balmy but intriguing and worth stopping in en-route to coastal resorts. Other attractions in the country include the more isolated northern region, with its welcoming tribal people, the exquisite Lake Turkana, inhabited by algae that turn the vast body of water to startling shades of blue and green, and the medieval island of Lamu, which can be reached by boat from Mokowe, and is peppered with fine traditional architecture. Personal safety is a particular concern in Kenya and robbery and muggings are often reported, there is also some unsettling political activity so travel insurance is essential. ' ' |
