The lake has an enchanting combination of lush Mediterranean foliage and snowy alpine peaks. One of the best places to enjoy panoramic views is in Piazza Cavour, on the banks of the lake, in the town. The cathedral here is also of interest. At the centre of old town, Piazza San Fedele is home to many 400-year-old buildings and the basilica. At the top of via Cantù youll see the old walls most impressive standing tower, the Porta Vittoria. Nearby is the somber church of San Abbondio. The Tempio Voltiano, on the western side of the lake, is a classic temple with marble columns and mosaic floors, housing the apparatus of Alessandro Volta, inventor of a battery that was the first reliable source of electricity. Nearby are the stunning gardens and wild park of Villa dellOlmo, an extravagant lake home. Alternatively, take the funivia up to Brunate for a truly spectacular view. Serious hikers will enjoy the footpath up to Monte Boletto.Out and aboutA short drive from Como leads you to Cernobbio, where the town plays host to delightful picturesque houses and narrow alleys plus one of the grandest hotels in Europe, the Villa D’Este. To the north is Lake Como’s only island, Isola Comacina, where every June 24 they have a costumed procession from the ruins of San Eufemia. Tremezzo is another lakeside town worth exploring. Here you’ll find a lakeside promenade, as well as many wonderful old villas. Varenna is considered the most beautiful town on the lake; its steep winding alleys are lined with charming homes, flowering balconies and lace-curtained windows. Bellaggio, on the southern shore of the lake, is known also as ‘la perla del lago’ (the pearl of the lake).Leisure OptionsComo is delightfully sprinkled with many quality eateries and designer shops. However, those in search of bargains should head to the market in Piazza San Fedele the first Saturday of every month.SafetyTourists are a lot more susceptible to dangers when on holiday and should remain alert at all times. Pickpockets are prevalent in the busier areas of resorts. Driving and water sports are a potential hazard and tourists should be extra vigilant. We strongly recommend you take out adequate travel insurance for yourself and your family.Weather in ComoThe area around Como has a very mild climate. Many people find it suitable for winter holidays. The summer temperature does not exceed 30C and the heat is balanced by a breeze which is typical of this region.
