The charming port town of Ancona is located on two hills surrounding a harbour. It is a vibrant, bustling town which has thrived since Roman times. Besides being a great holiday destination in itself, Ancona is also a great base from which to discover the lovely beaches and sights of the Marche region of Italy.

Getting there

Raffaello Sanzio Airport in Falconara is just 10kms from Ancona. If arriving by car from the north or south of Italy, take the A14 motorway. Trains run frequently from Rome, Bologna and Milan. Ships and ferries arrive from Greece, Croatia, Turkey, Cyprus, Albania and Crete.

The highlights of Ancona can be found in the old town, nestled on and around Colle Guasco, the hill above the port. This is the location of the town’s most prominent landmark, the medieval cathedral of San Ciriaco. The stunning castle interior is decorated with Byzantine art and houses a pagan temple in the crypt. In the area, you can also see the restored 19th century Teatro delle Muse and the art gallery in the Palazzo Bosdari. Other famous sights worth visiting are the 16th century Calamo Fountain (featuring 13 spouts); the Archaeological Museum; and the ruined Roman amphitheatre.

Out and about

Mount Conero lies to the south of Ancona and is home to three resort towns. Especially seductive is the lovely seaside village of Sirolo, featuring a medieval core, Roman ruins and an immaculate beach.
