click here for a single trip travel insurance quotation Information on Budapest with single trip travel insurance from Essential TravelBudapest is the capital of Hungary and often touted as the ‘Paris of the East’. It is home to fine old buildings and retains some remnants of its great Habsburg heyday. This grand old city is actually divided into two parts, with Buda being the more historic and interesting section, which rests south of the Danube with an excellent view of the flatter Pest section, north of the Danube banks.Key attractions in BudapestHösök tere (Heroes Square) is a good starting point for a visit to Budapest and a landmark of the city. From here, you’ll want to see the Varga Imre Gyüjtemény (Imre Varga Collection), home to pieces by this contemporary sculptor. Also of interest is Lakásmúzeum (Zsigmond Kun Folk Art Museum) which houses Kun’s collection of Hungarian folk art in his former apartment. The walled Castle district in Buda is home to the medieval old town, Royal Palace, Budapest Historical Museum, Hungarian National Gallery and Library and the 700-year-old Gothic St Matthias Church.Out and about in BudapestPalatinus Strand lies in the centre of Margaret Island and is Budapests best-located strand (beach). It is fed by the Margaret Island thermal springs and visitors can enjoy three thermal pools, a massive swimming pool, a smaller artificial wave pool and a water slide. There are also segregated nude-sunbathing decks, as well as table tennis, pool tables, trampolines, and dozens of snack bars. There are several historical towns nestled among the hills above the Danube, and one of the most charming is Szentendre (15 minutes by road to the north).Leisure optionsThe area is famous for its hot springs and spas, and you can relax at Rudas Baths, one of Budapests classic Turkish baths. There is also the Király Baths, which has days for women only. Alternatively, you can take in some Hungarian folk music and dance at the Marczibányi Square Cultural House or the FMH Cultural House. A favourite with children is the Gyermekvasút (Childrens Railroad), run by closely supervised and well trained Hungarian children.SafetyBe alert for pickpockets when riding buses in Budapest, as well as around busy tourist areas. Tourists are always more susceptible when in an unfamiliar environment and we strongly recommend you take out travel insurance for you and your family. ' ' |
