Of all the Ionian Islands, Kefalonia suffers the least from the encroachment of tourism. Although the tourist industry here is well developed, the island is steeped in natural wonders, golden beaches and a plethora of archaeological sites, and retains a traditional Greek heritage and a relaxed atmosphere.

Getting there

Kefalonia’s domestic airport offers several flights a day with Olympic Airlines to and from Athens. There are also several daily ferries from many Italian ports to nearby Corfu, as well as direct ferries to and from various ports on the Greek mainland.

Key attractions

The island’s capital city of Argostoli features the island’s most diverse choice of hotels and restaurants. For visitors who like the comfort of an urban centre but want the option of going on daytrips to sample the island’s beaches and mountains, this is an ideal place to stay. The wide variety of cafés in Central Square (Vallianou) creates an idyllic setting, while the waterfront is a great place to enjoy a coffee or an ice cream. There is also the magnificent Archaeological Museum in the square.

The only locale to have structures that survived the 1953 earthquake is the port village of Fiskardo, which is steeped in charm and features a picturesque harbour with many buildings dating back to the 18th century.

Leisure options

Despite the less developed nature of this island, there are still abundant leisure opportunities to be had here. Just south of Argostoli is Lassi, a resort area featuring many pretty beaches, hotels and a good choice of cafés. Farther south you’ll reach Fiskardos harbour, which offers many more excellent restaurants including Nicholas Taverna, Panormos, Tassias and the Vassos.

Safety

While travelling in unfamiliar environments, visitors should remain alert for potential threats and hazards. Tourists are susceptible to theft, pick pocketing or loss of personal effects. Outdoor activities including water sports and driving may place you at risk of having an accident, while language barriers and being in an unusual setting can all result in missed travel arrangements or troublesome bookings.
