Travel to Corfu

Located off the west coast of Greece, Corfu, of all the Ionian Islands, is the most popular among tourists. The combination of the island’s well-developed tourist industry, natural beauty and ancient history together with regular ferries from Italy result in the island being a popular destination for many European holidaymakers.

Getting there

Corfu’s international airport caters for many scheduled and charter flights during the tourist season. Car ferries also make frequent trips from Brindisi, Trieste and Venice in Italy as well as from Patras in Greece.

Key attractions

Located at the centre of the island is Corfu Town, with its contrasting ancient structures and modern high-rise holiday apartments. Liston’s café-filled arcades and the Byzantine architecture of the old Venetian town are the main attractions of Corfu Town.

For a livelier atmosphere, head for the more heavily developed east coast or even farther north to the scenic Venetian harbour at Koulouras, while along the coast Nisaki and Agni offer peaceful taverns that make an ideal place for relaxing.

For a break from the tourist resorts and all the sun, sand and sea, head to Kassiopi, a quaint village on the coast with a rich Byzantine, Hellenistic, Venetian and Roman past. South of Corfu Town are many ancient ruins scattered all over the Kanoni Peninsula.

Leisure options

Some of the best beaches can be found on the less developed west coast. Paleokastritsa resort is largely unspoilt, with excellent snorkelling and lush mountainous scenery. For water sports, head to Agios Georgios. At over 3,280 feet high, Mount Pantokrator is the highest peak on the island and great for hiking.

Safety

When travelling to an unfamiliar environment, you should keep alert for potential hazards. Holidaymakers are a common target for pick pocketing, theft or loss of personal effects. Driving, water sports and other outdoor activities may place you at an increased risk of accidents, while language difficulties and strange routines can also result in missed travel arrangements or troublesome bookings.
