Travel to Aix-en-Provence

Aix-en-Provence is a conservative and strikingly beautiful city. The former capital of Provence is renowned for its vibrant festivities and support of the arts. The old city here is home to a cluster of boulevards and the marvellous cours Mirabeau. Aix-en-Provence is energetic and bustling with people, and there are plenty of charming restaurants, cafés and shops, along with a few quaint markets. Additionally, the Université dAix has been attracting international students since 1413, adding a youthful glow to the city.

Information on Aix-en-Provences key attractions

the best way to see this majestic city is on foot. Strolling beneath the huge plane trees that shade cours Mirabeau is a must. When you’re ready to see some museums, purchase a Passeports Musees, which gives reductions on the price of entry to Aixs museums: Musée Granet, Pavillon Vendôme, Musée des Tapisseries and École dArt. Aix-en-Provence also boasts a few summer festivals showcasing music, opera and dance. Saison dAix (June to August) focuses on symphonic and chamber music; while the Jazz Festival (end of July) attracts musicians from all over the world. Additionally, the Festival International de Danse (three weeks, July to August) attracts classical and modern dance troupes from throughout Europe and the world.

Out and about

Just 25kms away is the metropolis of Marseilles, vastly different from Aix-en-Provence. Frances chief Mediterranean port has a large ethnic population from North Africa and boasts a trading history going back 2,500 years. A popular sight in Marseilles is Notre Dame de la Garde, which dominates the city from a 154-metre high hill overlooking the Vieux Port (Old Port). The entrance to the Vieux Port is guarded by the 13th century Bas Fort St Nicholas, built by the Knights Templer. La Canabiere is an area bursting with restaurants, seedy bars, cheap hotels and tourist shops.

Leisure options

there are plenty of places to eat or enjoy a drink in Aix-en-Provence. Place des Cardeurs and rue de la Verrerie are good places to check out restaurants, brassieres and cafés; while place Ramus is home to some international fare, including: Indian, Chinese and North African.

Safety

when travelling to an unfamiliar environment, remain alert for potential hazards. Holidaymakers are more susceptible to pickpocketing, theft or loss of personal effects. Outdoor activities and driving can place you at greater risk of having an accident. Language barriers and strange routines can also result in missed travel arrangements or problematic bookings. We strongly recommend you take out travel insurance for you and your family.

Weather in Aix en Provence

The town basks in the dry and warm Mediterranean climate all year round. Even in mid-winter its often still warm enough to sit outside and have lunch. Summer temperatures average 23C and the winters are pleasant and warm. It is still warm enough to swim in October. ' '
