Travel to Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is located on the eastern portion of the Caribbean island of Hispaniola, bordering with Haiti. The white-sand beaches, impressive mountain ranges, spectacular rivers and waterfalls, and saltwater lakes teeming with tropical wildlife are just part of the Dominican Republics appeal.

The capital, Santo Domingo, is a lively, exciting, city with quite a lot to see and do. As is the case with many Caribbean cities, there are parts that are dirty and polluted, and there are parts that can be dangerous at times.

A site worth visiting is the Zona Colonial, the landing point of the Spanish conquest of the Americas, and a post once occupied by Christopher Columbus son, Diego. Visitors may want to plan their stay to coincide with one of the carnivals held here each year; the parades, exotic floats, live music and dancing in the streets can be quite electrifying.

The northern coast of the Dominican Republic, the Amber Coast, gets its name from the worlds richest deposits of amber, found in the nearby hills. Also known for its 120-kilometre-long stretch of beautiful beaches, some of the laid-back atmosphere has diminished along with the increase of tourist developments geared towards package tourists.

The Dominican Republic wisely established the Parques Nacionales in the 1950s, and the Cordillera Central, home to the highest peaks in the Caribbean, now attracts hikers from around the world. The pretty town of Constanza, which stands 1,200m high in the Cordillera Central, makes a wonderful base from which to explore the region. Apart from its fruit orchards, commercial flower gardens and forests, Constanza also boasts a refreshing climate for Dominicans seeking an escape from the heat of the coast.
