Boasting a fascinating history dating back to the early Viking inhabitants, Denmark offers visitors a relaxed ambience, as well as exciting pre-historic sites, Renaissance castles and the celebrated Legoland.

Scandinavias leading city, Copenhagen, is filled with sightseeing and entertainment options, most of which are concentrated around the central square, Rådhuspladsen. From here, it’s a short walk to the pedestrianised shopping mall of Strøget, and Rundetårn, a 17th century observatory tower. Impressive churches include Vor Frue Kirke and the Baroque Vor Frelsers Kirke. Excellent museums include Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek and Nationalmuseet. Additionally, the famous Tivoli Gardens are a must-see.

The commercial centre of Jutland, Århus is a vibrant university city. Den Gamle By (the old town) is a magnificent open-air museum. Main attractions include the 12th century Romanesque chapel of Århus Domkirke and the stately Vor Frue Kirke. Also in Jutland, Legoland is a popular place for children. On the west coast of Jutland, Ribe is an old town steeped in Viking and medieval history.

Northeast of Bornholm is the charming 17th century island fortress of Christiansø. Also worth visiting, the quaint fishing port of Skagen has undulating sand dunes and fine sand beaches. The Skagens Museum and Den Tilsandede Kirke (Buried Church) are major sights.

Northwest of Copenhagen, Hillerød is home to some of the country’s best castles, in particular the Frederiksborg Slot, a Dutch Renaissance castle on a stunning lake. Egeskov Castle, on Funan Island, is also magnificent. The tiny island of Møn offers a relaxed atmosphere, beautiful forests and the chalk cliffs of Møns Klint. Ærø is an island full of farms, thatched houses, old windmills and ancient passage graves and dolmens. Skagen, on Jutlands northern tip, is popular among locals, who visit in the summer for its beaches, dunes and laid-back feel.
