Travel to Zagreb

Zagreb is the vibrant capital of Croatia and the former cultural capital of Yugoslavia. This cosmopolitan city has a lengthy history and is filled with art and modern culture. Zagreb is also bustling with energetic cafés, raucous nightclubs and a range of good festivals.

Info on Zagrebs Key attractions

Jalacic square is situated at the centre of the city and is always a lively place to people-watch. From here, it is a pleasant walk to the cathedral and the central market. North, in the Upper Town, is the Stone Gate, which has a shrine to the Virgin Mary. St Mark’s Church is another worthwhile sight, with a charismatic interior designed by Croatias most prominent sculptor, Ivan Mestrovic.

Out and about

there is some magnificent countryside at Hrvatsko Zagorje, at the northern end of Zagreb. This hilly area encapsulates historic villages, farms, vineyards and spas. Veliki, Trakoscan and Beranac castles afford amazing views. Trakoscan Castle is in a fantasy setting in the woods, overlooking a small lake. Nestled in the Velebit Mountains, the Kuterevo Brown Bear Orphanage is a haven for orphaned bear cubs. Here, you can see the bears being fed, take part in an educational bear walk and visit the educational centre. Alternatively, Plesivicka Vinska Cesta is an area which has so many wineries it is referred to as Wine Road.

Leisure Options

for a break from sightseeing, the Upper Town has some quiet, leafy parks to stroll around with the occasional soothing view. Zagreb has a healthy nightlife, best found in the many cafés and bars in the pedestrian area around Gajeva and Bogoviceva - especially along Tkalciceva, just north of Trg bana Jelacica. If you’re looking for something even more outgoing, there are an abundance of noisy dance clubs scattered around the city.

Safety

Zagreb is an excellent holiday destination, but always try to remain alert to possible dangers. Driving can place you at a greater risk of having an accident. Travellers should also beware pickpockets. We strongly recommend you take out travel insurance for you and your family.

Weather in Zagreb

Zagreb has a continental climate with an average summer temperature up to 30C. It can get quite cold in the winter with temperatures dropping down to -10C. ' '
