Additionally, the excellent skiing and scenic hiking trails provide good ways to enjoy the outdoors.The cosmopolitan capital of Brussels is dominated by a pentagon of boulevards called the Petit Ring. The Grand Palace lies at the centre of the city, and is a good point from which to start a walking tour of the rest of the city, including passing by the Manneken Pis statue and the Comic Strip Centre. The Ancient Art and Modern Art museums are also worth seeing. Restaurants and pubs are found all along Rue des Bouchers. Nestled on the banks of the Scheldt River north of Brussels, Antwerp is home to stunning medieval castles and a diverse array of mansions. Belgiums largest Gothic Church, Onze-Lieve-Vrouwe Katedraal, is also here. Additionally, there is a good selection of galleries and museums, including the Royal Museum of Fine Art. Another notable city, medieval Bruges has a laid-back atmosphere that is popular with visitors. The city is pedestrianised and quite intimate, and strolling around the charming streets is a good pastime. Alternatively, you can climb up to the Central Belfort for breathtaking panoramic views of the old city. Famous museums and galleries, including the 14th century Stadhuis and the Groeninge Museum, are equally worth visiting. The gorgeous Belgian countryside is home to some quaint towns and villages. Ghent is cradled in the junction of the Leie and Scheldt rivers. This sizable city has a long history of civil wars and uprisings. The main attraction here is the Belfort, providing good views of the medieval landscape. Also of interest, Sint-Baafskathedral contains many masterpieces, including the fine works of Jan van Eyck. Belgiums oldest town, Tongeren, is situated east of Brussels. Dating from 15 BC, when it was a Roman military base, the town is still surrounded by Roman and medieval walls. The collection of Gallo-Roman remains is well worth seeing. The beautiful, natural region of Ardennes is the historical site of the Battle of the Bulge.
