Getting There

Charleston Yeager Airport is served by some national and regional carriers; however, international travellers will most likely arrive via Washington, DC, Baltimore or Richmond. Wheeling, Huntington and Parkersburg all have regional airports. Amtrak stops in Charleston on its way north through Ohio to Chicago from Washington, DC. Greyhound Lines bus service is another option, although uncomfortable and not recommended.

Travelling by car is the best way to see the state. I-79 runs from Charleston to Pittsburgh; I-77 goes from Charleston to Cleveland, from which I-90 goes through Chicago to the west and all the way to Seattle or east to Boston. I-77 also goes south to Richmond (Virginia), while I-68 goes to Baltimore (Maryland).

Travellers can put themselves at risk when driving across long distances. Additionally, participating outdoor activities can result in accidents. Beware of pickpocketers in the larger cities.
