As big as France, Texas is a huge and diverse state. The Lone Star State’s many attractions range from the beaches of the Gulf Coast to the thriving metropolises of Houston and Dallas, to the artistic community of Austin and the cowboy heritage of Fort Worth. Getting There
The major airports in the state are Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston, Austin and El Paso. All are served by most major domestic carriers and some offer flights to Europe and South America. Amtrak trains stop in Houston and San Antonio on their way from New Orleans to Los Angeles and back; from Chicago, there are stops in Dallas, Austin and San Antonio. Greyhound has an extensive network across the state and nationally.
The state is well served by the US interstate highway system and the Texas highway system. San Antonio and Dallas are connected by I-35; Houston and Dallas by I-45; and San Antonio and Houston by I-10.
Safety
Texas is huge and driving distances can be vast, so be careful to have plenty of water and spare petrol. Visitors should also be wary in some areas of Dallas and Houston at night. Due to the high costs of medical care in the US, it is advisable to take out travel insurance before visiting Texas.
Weather in Texas
The weather is extremely varied with dry and hot conditions along the border with Mexico. The Gulf Coast is hot and humid with very mild winters. In the northwest winter snow and colder conditions are common.
