Getting There

If you are coming directly to the state from overseas, it is more likely you will fly into the larger airport in Memphis. Regional carriers fly from Memphis and Nashville to some of the smaller cities in the state such as Knoxville and Chattanooga. Though not extensively served by rail, Memphis is on Amtrak’s City of New Orleans run, from Chicago to New Orleans. By bus, Greyhound operates extensively across the state.

By car, I-40 connects Memphis with Nashville and Raleigh to the east and Little Rock and Oklahoma City to the west. I-55 connects Memphis to New Orleans in the south and to St Louis and Chicago to the north. From Nashville, I-65 runs north to Louisville, Kentucky, and south to Birmingham, Alabama. I-24 runs northwest towards St Louis and southeast towards Atlanta.

Caution should be advised in some areas of Memphis after dark. Motor vehicle accidents are a leading cause of death in the US and you should be careful while travelling along the interstates.
