Getting There
American, Continental, Southwest, United and US Airways serve TF Green/Providence Airport, south of Providence. From here, you can get flights to cities around the US and Canada. Amtrak’s high-speed rail line which runs between Boston and Washington, DC also stops in Providence; additionally, Amtrak runs regular trains between Rhode Island’s major cities. Greyhound buses link the state’s major cities and towns.
By car, I-95 connects Boston and New York and runs right through Newport and Providence. From Cape Cod, pick up I-195 west. From New York City, take I-95 to the third Newport exit, picking up route 138 east, and cross the Newport toll bridge to the downtown district. From Boston, another route to the state is to take route 24 through Fall River, picking up route 114 into Providence.
Safety
Although Rhode Island is probably one of the safer states in terms of crime, travellers in an unfamiliar environment can still have accidents or problems with travel arrangements. Additionally, driving on snowy or icy roads in winter can be tricky, with car accidents being a leading cause of death in the US.
