Information on Marmaris with single trip travel insurance from Essential Travel

Famed for the Netsel Marina, a state-of-the-art facility, Marmaris is popular with the yachting set. The city is one of Turkeys top holiday resorts, set around a sweeping natural bay and boasting an old town with a delightful maze of twisting little streets and alleys. Turkish style whitewashed houses are dotted across the town and there is an excellent shopping bazaar.

Key Attractions

Marmaris is perfect for water sports, especially sailing. The palm-lined promenade is a delightful area for strolling. The pine-covered mountains surrounding the area offer a scenic backdrop to the tiny bays, inlets, and coves of the Datça Peninsula. A short drive out of town reveals a plethora of ancient civilizations, some woven into humble villages, as well as marinas and fine beaches.

The Marmaris Castle Museum is located in the fortress in the old section of Marmaris above the harbour. You can access it through the bazaar behind the Atatürk statue and the views of the harbour from here are spectacular.

Out and About

Just outside of Marmaris you’ll find the charming resort of Içmeler, nestled in a sheltered cove at the base of rippling pine-covered mountains. Alternatively, the village of Turunç, to the south, boasts a blend of traditional charm and modernity. North of Marmaris, Gökova is popular with yachters, and features clumps of picturesque wooden houses of the two-storey Ottoman style.

The charming port village of Datça is the site of the original ancient city of Knidos. Eski, or Old Datça, is a landlocked village with a fairytale setting of old stone houses, carved doorways, and cobbled lanes dating back to when this was a Greek town, many hundreds of years earlier.

Leisure Options

There are plenty of boats offering daytrips through neighbouring waters, with a typical excursion heading to the south to Turunç, Umlu, Cadirgan and Çiftlik bays, as well as Cleopatras (Sedir) Island.

Safety

Marmaris is an excellent holiday destination, but visitors should always try to remain alert to possible dangers, including pickpocketing. Outdoor sports and boating can also put you at risk of having an accident. We strongly recommend you take out travel insurance for you and your family.

Weather in Marmaris

On the whole you can guarantee blue skies, sunshine and warm water in Marmaris. The winters are mild and the summers are very hot with temperatures often rising above 30C in July and August. Showers are unlikely in the summer months but the rainfall can be quite high in winter.
