Travel to Izmir

Izmir, in the Southern Aegean, is a charming Turkish seaside village which is also known as Güzelyali (beautiful waterfront). It is a good base from which to explore the ancient sites of Ephesus, Miletus, Priene, Pergamon, Aphrodisius and Pamukkale.

Information on Izmir key attractions

the Arkeoloji Müzesi (Archaeology Museum) houses an impressive collection of ancient and Roman artefacts recovered from excavations in the area, including Bergama, Iasos, Bayrakli and Agora. The Etnografya Müzesi (Ethnography Museum) is housed in a stunning old mansion, formerly a hospital. It features accurate reconstructions of salons from Ottoman homes, including a bridal chamber. There is also a good collection of popular folkloric art, ceramics, copper utensils, and traditional costumes and decorative fabrics.

The verdant waterside park and promenade called the Kordon, is a lovely place to stroll. The Asansör quarter is named after the 19th century passenger elevator which was constructed to provide access between the upper and lower levels of the neighbourhood. The view from the 50-metre high café is lovely.

Out And About

nearby, the magnificent ruins at Ephesus are definitely worth the trip. Ephesus is one of the best preserved ancient cities on the Mediterranean and is significant to the start and evolution of Christianity. It takes at least half a day to get a good overview of the archaeological site. Selçuk is three kilometres from Ephesus and hosts the Ephesus Museum, one of the most important in Turkey. Farther afield, Kusadasi lies 90kms from Izmir. Just beyond this city’s limits are some gorgeous coastlines and yachting is quite popular.

Leisure options

shopping can be done on foot in and around the Konak area in downtown Izmir, which includes the bazaar, also known as Kemeralti. Deniz Restaurant is known by some as Izmirs best restaurant, serving the favourite meaty dish, balik kavurma.

Safety

visitors should remain alert for potential hazards, especially pickpockets. Additionally, outdoor activities can place you at greater risk of having an accident. Language barriers and strange routines can also result in missed travel arrangements. We strongly recommend you take out travel insurance for you or your family when visiting Izmir.

Weather in Izmir

Izmir is the third larges city in Turkey, with mild and sunny weather. Summer in Izmir lasts from march till october. Whatever part of Turkey you are going to you are advised to take a light top for the evening. ' '
