Travel to La Spezia

Nestled on plains encased by undulating hills and the sparking sea, La Spezia is located in the inner part of the Golfo dei Poeti in northwestern Italy. This small but cosmopolitan town boasts a colourful history and a dynamic seafront, drawing in visitors year round.

Getting there

Linate and Malpensa, located in Milan, are the nearest international airports, but you can fly into Genoa as well. By car from Genoa, take A12. Hourly trains run from Genoa to La Spezia, taking 1 hour, 30 minutes. You can also arrive here by ferry from Corsica and other destinations.

Information on La Spezias key attractions

The SantAgostino and del Bastione squares are the most famous historical sights in the city. By the seafront, historical gardens burst with a vibrant combination of colours. La Spezia’s streets are pedestrian-friendly and closed to traffic. Prione street is home to a plethora of shops and cafés, while the nearby corso Cavour features Liberty style buildings from the late 19th century.

Out and about

You can take an exciting daytrip from La Spezia to the military shipyard spread along 12kms of roads. Additional highlights include a grand statue of the shipyards builder, along with a naval museum telling the story of the Italian Navy. The famous area of Cinque Terre (Five Lands) is located nearby and is comprised of the rural villages of Corniglia, Manarola, Riomaggiore and Vernazza (inaccessible by car), along with the city of Monterosso. The villages are best explored by boat and there are plenty of charming walking trails. Additionally, the food here is fresh and delightful.

Leisure options

There are lots of places to shop, but for the most authentic experience, head to Cavour (or del Mercato) square, Monday to Saturday. The market here sells fruit and vegetables, cold cuts and cheese, as well as flowers and plants. Additionally, plenty of good restaurants can be found around the main squares. Bars and cafés offer a sedate but charming nightlife.

Safety

Remain alert when travelling to an unfamiliar environment. Holidaymakers can be more susceptible to pickpocketing, theft or loss of personal effects. Outdoor activities and driving can also place you at greater risk of having an accident. When travelling to La Spezia, we strongly recommend you take out travel insurance for you and your family.

Weather in La Spezia

Travelling to La Spezia in April/June or September/Otober you will find that the temperature will be around 20-32C. If you go in July or August they can reach up to 37C and the air will feel a lot more humid. The winters are mild but you would still find it too cool to lie on the beach.
