Not only does the island feature picturesque coastal villages, resorts and golden beaches, but it also features a rich history which is worth spending some of your holiday time delving into. Key attractionsThe island’s capital is the city of Rhodes, famous for being the one-time host of one of the seven wonders of the ancient world - the famous Colossus. While there are no significant ruins of this structure to be found today, the ancient Acropolis to the east of the city offers a pristinely restored 3rd-century stadium. The Grand Hospital of the Knights and the Palace of the Grand Masters form part of the city that has been designated as a World Heritage Site since 1988. Other attractions include Freedom Gate (Pili Eleftherias), the majestic entrance to the city, many museums and the grand Harbour Gate. The town of Lindos also has many historically important sites, with the 4th-century BC Temple of Athena being the main draw for tourists. Yet another great ancient city worth visiting is the 7th-century BC city of Karimos. Leisure optionsDespite the island’s rich historical offerings, most visitors come here for the beaches and visitors to Rhodes will not be disappointed with the beautiful coastline on offer here. The busiest resort is Faliraki Beach, while those who are after a more relaxed break will find the east side of the island more suitable, with some idyllic spots to be found between Gennadi and Plimmyri. There is a plentiful supply of restaurants and bars dotted throughout the island and a few discos can be found at the more popular resorts. SafetyWhen travelling to unfamiliar environments, it is important you remain alert for potential hazards. Tourists are more susceptible to pick pocketing, theft or loss of personal effects. Water sports, driving and outdoor activities can place you at an increased risk of having an accident. Language barriers and strange routines can also result in missed travel arrangements or problematic bookings. We strongly advise you take out travel insurance for you and your family if you are intending to travel and holiday in Rhodes. ' ' |
