Travel to Bonn

The delightful city of Bonn was formerly the capital of West Germany and is most famous as the birthplace of Ludwig van Beethoven and the place where Robert Schumann died.

Information on Bonns key attractions

Bonn’s riverfront was completely transformed after WWII with the addition of the modernist Opera House and a new road to the Rhine Bridge. The majority of the old town centre, however, has been left unchanged and boasts a medieval street plan, as well as a vibrant daily fruit and vegetable market. Near this Markt is the Bongasse, once home to Beethoven. The museum displays memorabilia and manuscripts from the great musicians life.

Out and about

The Middle Rhine Valley, just south of Bonn, features vineyards and ruined castles. For a bit of quiet, Hofgarten Park has some gorgeous walkways and sparkling rivers. The Akademisches Kunstmuseum (Academic Art Museum) is nestled inside the park and has a great view of the Rhine River.

The magnificent Baroque palace Bruhl, just 15kms from Bonn, has a history dating back to the Roman Empire. Meanwhile, hikers will not want to miss the Siebengebirge (Seven Hills), an excellent hiking area on the southeastern outskirts of Bonn. Additional opportunities to enjoy the outdoors can be found at the Kottenforst and Ennert forests.

For some more urban delights outside of Bonn, visit the nearby city of Cologne, best known for its excellent museums, cosmopolitan atmosphere and energetic nightlife. The main sight here is the Dom, a 13th century cathedral. The Südstadt is the place to relax in stylish bars and retaurants.

Leisure options

Bonn has two main shopping streets, Sternstrasse and Remigiusstrasse. These streets will take you to the second main square, the Münsterplatz. At the centre is the Romanesque Münster basilica, Bonns most famous landmark. A great place to dine is Em Höttche - one of Bonns most traditional restaurants, dating back to 1389.

Safety

Violent crimes are uncommon in Bonn, but the crowded tourist centres attract plenty of pickpockets and bag snatchers, so you need to be on your guard. For peace of mind make sure that you take out travel insurance before you leave home.

Weather in Bonn

Bonn has a temperate climate with summer temperatures ranging from 20 - 30C. Unfortunately, the weather is also highly unpredictable and you would be advised to take an umbrella with you at all times. ' '
