St Malo once guarded not only the mouth of the Rance river, but the coastal area beyond. Even today, the walls and towers create an intriguing medieval atmosphere. The ancient fort of Alet, dating from well before the time of the Romans, is a highlight. Additionally, the fort offers spectacular views of the town and surrounding coastline. Exploration of the maze of old streets, lanes and alleys will reward you with charming traditional buildings and squares.

Out and about

The surrounding countryside holds many great destinations for daytrips. Twenty kilometres down the Rance river is the medieval town of Dinan. Alternatively, to the west is the famous island of Île de Bréhat and the pink granite coastline of the Côte de Granit Rose.

Mont San Michel, which is technically in Normandy but still easy to get to from St Malo, is one place that should not be missed if you are in the region. This rugged island can be reached at low tide across a causeway. The island is comprised of a granite rock about 300m in diameter, with an abbey constructed between the 11th and 16th centuries on top of it.

The streets in the centre of town are quite festive, especially at night. Excellent restaurants, delightful cafés and vibrant bars all contribute to the fantastic nightlife here. By day, families can enjoy the safe, quiet beaches.
