Information on Perpignan

Travel to Perpignan

Perpignan is located near the Mediterranean Sea and is only about 30kms from the Spanish border. The city retains a distinct Spanish flavour as it was once the capital of the kingdom of Majorca and later Catalonias second-largest city after Barcelona. Perpignan’s height was in the 13th and 14th centuries, when the kings of Majorca held their court here. Today it is a fascinating city to explore.

Getting there

Aéroport de Perpignan-Rivesaltes is 10kms northwest of the town and receives flights from several European destinations. Nearby Marseilles has a busier airport. By car from Paris, take the A6 to the A7 outside Lyon. Continue on the A7, which leads to the A9 all the way to Perpignan. It takes about eight hours to cover the 900-kilometre journey. From Spain and Barcelona, head north on the A9 all the way to Perpignan.

Key attractions

The Castillet is one of the main attractions of Perpignan. This building, dating from the 14th century, is a combination gateway and fortress, housing a museum with exhibits of Catalon regional artefacts.

Out and about

Perpignan is in a great location near some outstanding cities, both French and Spanish. The Pyrenees are also nearby, and for a spectacular drive, take the N116 highway to the west of the city heading for the mountains.

Leisure Options

Perpignan is one of the sunniest places in France, and the best place to enjoy the outdoors is at the nearby beach. Additionally, the Basse River is a good place to cool off. There are often impromptu night-time concerts and beer-drinking here.

Safety

When visiting Perpignan, you should be alert for pickpockets. Water sports, outdoor activities and driving place you at greater risk of having an accident. Language barriers and strange routines can also result in problematic bookings. Taking out travel insurance for you and your family is recommended.

Weather in Perpignan

Peripignan between the months of June and October are ideal if you are looking for a sunny break away, with temperatures ranging from mid 20sc to highs of 30c in August. November through to May have cooler temperatures of around 12c, and October to May tend to be the rainiest months.
