Travel to Montpellier

The French university town of Montpellier has a vibrant, youthful atmosphere and charming architecture. The city is best-known for its medical school, which was founded in the 13th century and attended by Nostradamus and Rabelais. Today, Montpellier is a busy metropolis with tree-lined promenades, broad avenues, and plenty of historic monuments.

Getting there

Marseilles Airport is closest to Montpellier, but most people arrive via Paris’ Charles de Gaulle or Orly airports from which transfers can be made easily by train. If youre driving, Montpellier lies off the A9, heading west.

The most stunning examples of Montpellier’s architectural heritage can be found in the ancient fortified section of the city. Tour des Pins and Tour de la Babotte are the remnants of the original twenty-five towers that once surrounded the city. Nearby, the churches of St Roch and St Anne both contain beautiful artwork.

Out and about

There are several sights in the region that can easily be reached on daytrips from Montpellier. Farther east are the beaches and resorts of the Côte dAzur. Away from the coast is the upper Herault Valley, with its ancient villages and spectacular scenery.

After a long day of sightseeing, you can wind down with a stroll or picnic at the Bois de Montmaurand and Parc Agropolis, or enjoy the exhibits at the Zoo de Lunaret.
