Travel to Nicosia

The capital of Cyprus, Nicosia (Lefkosia) has been divided since Turkey invaded Cyprus in 1974. However, this is doesnt detract from the magnificent history and all the good sights that both sides offer, and tourists are free to cross over on daytrips.

Getting there

the main international airports linking Cyprus to the outside world are at Larnaca and Paphos. Taxis are plentiful and many resorts offer shuttle buses. An infrequent and unreliable bus service also goes to Ayia Napa. Limassol is the main port and receives ferries from Athens, Crete, Patmos and Rhodes, as well as Israel.

Info on Nicosias Key attractions

Nicosia’s old town is encased by 16th century Venetian walls and is the most interesting part of the city. The Leventis Municipal Museum will help you to understand the development of the city from prehistoric times. Also fascinating is the Dragoman Hadzigeorgakis, which is a museum housed in a stunning 15th century mansion. Additionally, the Byzantine Museum boasts a fine collection of religious icons and mosaics. The Famagusta Gate is a famous landmark of the city. It is well preserved and today is used as a cultural centre. The Turkish Museum, housed in a 17th century monastery, is also quite interesting.

Out and about

the nearby resort at Kyrenia has excellent good tourist facilities and a castle. However, many holidaymakers head south to the sunny beaches and resorts of Lanarca, Limmasol, Ayia Napa and Pafos. Pafos is slightly inland, and features Saranta Kolones, a Lusignian fortress destroyed by an earthquake in the 13th century. The Tombs of the Kings, two kilometres north of Kato Pafos, are fascinating tombs carved into the soft rock of the sea-cliff. Also worth seeing, the stunning mountains of the Troödos region are dotted with incredible monasteries.

Leisure Options

just outside the city walls is the city centre and municipal gardens, where the modern town and tourist facilities, along with restaurants and bars, are located. Another popular place to relax is the Büyük Hammam, the citys largest Turkish baths.

Safety

visitors are more susceptible to accidents when in an unfamiliar environment. Additionally, pickpockets can be a problem anywhere, especially around night spots, and visitors should remain alert and vigilant. We strongly recommend you take out travel insurance for you and your family when visiting Nicosia.

Weather in Nicosia

If you want to see Cyprus in full bloom then Spring is the time to visit. The first orchids bloom in January and by mid February the countryside is alive with fresh green meadows. If you prefer lying on the beach, summer brings temperatures of up to 32C.
