Canoeing (Up to Grade 3)

Canoeing is a fun addition to your vacation itinerary. It allows you to get closer to nature, explore the various swamps and mangroves, and take in the beautiful scenery. Canoeing can be a very calm, serene, and solitary activity, as well as a fun activity for friends or family. Because the boat propels using only human muscle power, it is also a very healthy form of exercise. However, canoeing also exposes you to risks of injury and accidents. It is a good idea to secure travel insurance when engaging in this activity.

The most common injuries resulting from canoeing involve the wrist, hand, shoulders, elbow, and the forearm. Back injuries are also common. You may get sprains, tendinitis, chronic muscular pain, bruises, infections, dislocations, and lacerations. Acute injuries are also common, resulting from direct trauma. Some examples of acute injuries include abrasions, cuts, contusions, and various strains and sprains.

Canoeing can also result in major injuries such as broken bones, facial injuries, and head injuries. Some of these injuries can even be fatal. Chronic injuries (including tendon inflammation or tenosynovitis and chronic sprains or strains usually on the forearm and wrist) also result from the repetitive movement of the upper body, which consists most of the canoeing activity.

Canoeing is a variable risk sport - it can be low-risk (Grade 1) or high-risk (up to Grade 3) depending on the location where you are canoeing, your experience level, etc. To make sure you don't have to worry about medical bills in case you incur injuries that require hospitalization, secure sports travel insurance before canoeing.
