Baseball

According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, about half a million baseball-related injuries are remedied in the United States alone. Baseball may be a low-risk sport compared to others, but several injuries - some of which are serious - can be sustained by engaging in it. If you plan to play baseball during travel, it is a good idea to avail of sports travel insurance.

Just how dangerous is baseball? For starters, it uses almost every body part - the shoulders, elbows, hands (wrists and fingers), back, and the knees. Repeated bat swings can cause the tendons in the shoulders to swell (a condition called tendonitis). The tendons can redden, get sore, and bloat to hamper movement. In worst cases, wrong execution of bat swings can lead to grave injuries like shoulder separation and torn muscles and tendons. The same can happen in the elbows, leading up to ailments like Little League elbow, tennis elbow, and inflammation of the bursa.

Baseball can also sprain your wrists, disabling you from performing simple tasks such as writing. The bones in your fingers can also be fractured while you grip the bat or catch the ball.

Your back and your knees are likewise especially vulnerable because baseball requires constant posturing and running. Your back can sustain muscle strains as well as back pains. Playing baseball can also cause torn knee ligaments (a very common and very painful condition). Other baseball-related knee injuries include stress fractures, sprains, strains, and damaged knee tendons. Some of these cases can immobilize you. You may require evacuation and surgery, which are very costly if you are not covered by insurance.

Baseball is a Grade 1 risk sport, with a moderate chance of injury. Still, it is advisable to still get sports travel coverage to minimize your financial risk.
