Abseiling

Abseiling is a very useful technique used in various recreational activities that involve climbing. It is something you'll probably encounter on hiking trips, camping, trekking, or safaris. Because abseiling involves heights, balance, and control, there are potential risks in this type of activity. Most 'climbing accidents' in fact, occur when abseiling. There are also many places and areas where abseiling is discouraged or prohibited, due to the possibility of rock erosion and conflict with other climbers. Make sure that you have your travel insurance with you before you go abseiling.

Known as rappelling in North America and other parts of the world, abseiling is the process of descending on a rope. Abseiling can be done in various sports such as rock climbing, recreational canyoning, recreational caving, and adventure racing. It is also used in commercial and industrial purposes, as well as for military, rescue, and training applications. Abseiling can be a dangerous sport and should never be done without the supervision of trained people. A (trained) companion is also important should a rescue be needed in case you get trapped or incapacitated.

Injuries in abseiling could result from stress while abseiling, colliding with rocks, trees, and other objects, and from falls. Injuries include: bruising, rope burn, ankle and foot injuries, head injuries, spinal injuries, head traumas, hand injuries, fractured legs, and dislocations.

Abseiling is considered a Grade 3 risk sport, with a high chance of injury. It is highly recommended that you acquire travel insurance before engaging this type of activity.
